Alice In Chains
I see a lot of you out there are dressed up as Kiss…but none of you are dressed up like me. What’s up with that?
Seattle Sound
Coming from the city of Seattle, the group Alice in Chains was formed in 1987 by members Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley. They would play together for some time and then break up for a short period to pursue other projects. The group would come back and join the grunge movement of the early 1990’s .
First Projects
The group would form with original members such as Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Mike Starr, and Sean Kinney, who would form the group called Alice In Chains. It looked like the band would get their first break with Randy Hauser who wanted to sign them to a demo contract; however, his studio was raided shortly before the band was able to finish their demo due to reportedly housing marijuana in his studio. They would eventually be signed to Columbia Records in 1989.
The group would go on to release its first EP called We Die Young and instantly became a hit on the airwaves of metal rock radio. The record company decided it was in their best interest to rush the production of their debut album, which was called Facelift and was released in August of 1990. The album was not nearly the success that the company thought it would be and only sold about forty thousand copies in the first six months. Although the album was not a commercial success, it did afford the group the ability to tour with groups such as Iggy Pop, Van Halen, and Poison.
This would afford the group a large audience in the metal rock stage and the release of the single Man in the Box would be nominated for a Grammy Award. The band would go on to release another EP called Sap, which gained attention due to the heavily influenced sounds that were emerging in what was known as grunge rock.
Gaining Ground
The band would gain ground as the name Alice In Chains became more and more recognized in mainstream rock as well as the grunge metal sound. They would go back into the studio to release their next album called Dirt. The album would go on to be certified platinum of multiple times and was a great commercial success.
The album would contain the hit singles Rooster and Down In a Hole and would gain the attention of singer and performer Ozzy Osborne as they would tour as support for Osborne’s No More Tears Tour. After extensive touring over the next few months, the band went back into the studio to record the album Jar of Flies which would become the first EP to gain the attention of the charts.
The album contained singles such as I Stay Away and another hit Don’t Follow. Shortly after the album was released, Layne Staley entered rehab for a pressing heroin addiction. The group went on a short break in wait for Staley and when he got out they were planned to tour with Metallica and Suicidal Tendencies but the tour was cancelled due to Staley’s immediate return to using heroin, which also put the band on hiatus. The band would become somewhat inactive and Staley would go on to join another group to afford his habits.
Success and Tragedy
The band would eventually break up although not officially and most members would go their separate ways. Tragedy would strike Staley after becoming a recluse after the death of his wife. The team would reunite and record two more songs before Staley would release himself from the band once more. He would eventually be found dead in 2002 where he died of an overdose of both a heroin and cocaine mixture. His body was not discovered for what was said to be fourteen days after his death. Cantrell would go on to dedicate his next album, a solo album, to the memory of Staley.
Did You Know
The group toured in the early days with groups such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
