The singer and song writer Alanis Morissette was born in the Canadian province of Ottawa in Ontario Canada in 1974. She would begin playing the piano at age six and was said to love the art of music. She would spend years searching for that inner voice while emerging as one of pop rock's premiere female vocalists.
Start Up
She would strive for a music career from the time that she was in high school. Morissette entered talent shows and contests in hopes of gaining that one break that would launch her music career although she would have to wait longer than she expected. Finally, in 1988, she would sign a record contract with MCA Publishing to help her fund the recording of her first records. She would go on to release her first album that was self titled in 1991 but it was only released in Canada. With the release of her album, she would instantly be propelled into the music spotlight with her first album going platinum and the single Too Hot would reach the top twenty in Canada.
Other releases off of the album would also make it to the Top 40 in Canada with singles such as Walk Away and Feel Your Love. During this time she would go on to open up shows for the new rapper Vanilla Ice. Her next album would be released soon after her first and in 1992, the album Now Is the Time would be another album release in Canada. The album would also have hit singles that would reach to the Top 40 charts. The release of the single An Emotion Away would make it to the adult contemporary chart. She would also have fulfilled her record contract with MCA and she would then find herself without a label.
Move to the U.S.
In the early 1990's, Alanis Morissette would move to Los Angeles to try her look after other attempts in cities such as Nashville. She would meet producer Glen Ballard and would quickly release her next album called Jagged Little Pill on the Maverick Recording label. The first album single would gain radio recognition when it was picked up by an influential radio DJ from L.A. The song called You Oughta Know would instantly become a hit after radio play mainly due to its lyrics that rang of a sexual nature. The album would go on to sell thirty three million copies across the globe, which was enough for it to be certified multiple times platinum.
It would stay on the Billboard 200 album charts for more than one year, which is a feat that has not been accomplished very often. She would go on to release a few more albums to the present and one of which would feature Ringo Starr who was a former Beatle. She would also establish a very large fan base and her many fans can still follow her successful career on her official website.
