Every member of Alacranes Musical is thinking beyond his previous work and maintaining the level of quality in each record production, always thinking of working to keep their loyal following and increase their audience.
The Early Years
Alacranes, or Alacranes Musical were formed in 1996, by Oscar Urbina. They are a Mexican-American band, specializing in duranguese music. This genre of music refers to music of the people of Durango, Mexico. It is closely related to Mexican musical styles of banda and nortena, and it is very popular in Mexico and southeast United States. Duranguese music features trombones, saxophones, and a bass drum. What sets it apart from other similar genres is the use of synthesizers in place of various instruments including the tuba.
In 2003, Alacranes released the album, Furia Alacranera, which was completely made up of previously unreleased material, which was unprecedented for their genre of music. Under the leadership of Oscar Urbina, trombone player and band leader, the band has grown a strong following among Latin American music fans and Mexican American citizens in the United States.
A Prosperous Career
Alacranes released eleven albums between 1996 and 2007. Throughout the years, the band has been successful simply in ecording and performing for their own personal cult-type following. In 2007, however, their album, Ahora y Siempre, meaning Now and Forever, became their first #1 album on the US Latin Music chart. It was released as a CD/DVD combination. Singles included Por Amarte Asi, originally recorded by Latin star Cristian Castro, and Solo En Ti, written and recorded originally by Vince Clarke of Depeche Mode.
Their 2008 album, Tu Inspiracion, was met with eager welcome, in response to the success of its predecessor. Critics touted the album as being a creative combination of exuberance and melancholy. While this album did not enjoy the commercial success of its predecessor, it was popular among fans, and music sites which carry their music report consistent requests for mp3 dowloads from Alacranes.
What’s Next
Alacranes’ single, Por Amarte Asi, was the #1 choice for Latin ringtone downloads for weeks after its release. In 2009, they were nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Banda Album, and Por Amarte Asii has been used in the telenovela, Al Diablo Con Los Guapos. Judging from number of hits, their MySpace page is one the most popular among those of Latin musical groups.
Alacranes plan to continue to record and perform for years to come. Their most recent release, Live – En Vivo Desde Mexico, is a compilation of their studio hits, recorded live at various performances. Their next studio album may be released at the end of 2010 or the first part of 2011.
