Aerosmith
A lot of bands have managed to borrow parts of our style for their music. That's fine with me,because we've borrowed from people like the Stones. But we don't want to sound like we're copying anyone, including ourselves, so we're moving on.
The Early Years
Tom Hamilton and Joe Perry moved to Boston, in 1969. There they met drummer, Joe Kramer, who introduced them to Steven Tyler. Tyler was a drummer and backup singer, but had no interest in playing drums for the band; he became their lead singer. They played their first gig as Aerosmith in Mendon, Massachusetts, at Nipmuc Regional High School, in 1970.
The final addition to the band was rhythm guitarist Brad Whitford. Once the band was formed, they began to perform live shows locally, developing a loyal fan base. They signed a management deal with David Krebs and Steve Leber in 1972, who put them in touch with Columbia Records. With a recording contract with Columbia, the band released their first album, Aerosmith mid-1973. The album featured singles, Dream On and Mama Kin, which would become timeless classics.
Becoming A Legend
Their first album certified double platinum; they released their second album, Get Your Wings, that went triple platinum, in 1975. In 1976, Aerosmith released the enormously successful Toys in the Attic. With hit singles, Walk This Way, Toys in the Attic, and Sweet Emotion, the album certified platinum eight times over. Rolling Stone Magazine would later name the album #228 on their List of 500 Best Albums of All Time. Three more albums were released in the 1970s, all of which certified at least platinum.
In 1979, Joe Perry left the band to work on a new effort, entitled The Joe Perry Project. In 1980, Aerosmith released their Greatest Hits album, which certified Diamond (11X Platinum), achieving sales of at least 11 million copies. After several more albums which brought moderate sales, the band released Permanent Vacation in 1987, and Pump in 1989. The two were again extremely successful. They toured during this time with Guns N Roses.
Still Kickin'
Their 1992 album, Get A Grip, continued Aerosmith's reign of success. It was their first album to debut at #1, and ultimately certified 7x Platinum. Three more albums through 2004 proved very successful in varying degrees. They have continued to tour and perform; in 2001, Aerosmith performed at Superbowl XXXV, with 'Nsync, Britney Spears, Nelly, and Mary J. Blige. The finale involved all of the performers collaborating on Aerosmith's Walk This Way.
Aerosmith is scheduled to perform at the Annual Download Festival at Donington Park in England in 2010. Aerosmith is currently seeking a new lead singer, however, citing Tyler's long term recovery from injuries and surgery to his legs.
