Adele – Chasing Glory
"I was drinking far too much and that was kind of the basis of my relationship with this boy. I couldn't bear to be without him, so I was like, 'Well, OK, I'll just cancel my stuff then ... I can't believe I did that ... It seems so ungrateful” - Adele
Early Years
Adele was born in North London district of Tottenham. She began singing at a very early age and it has been said that she was obsessed with voices. She used to imitate the Spice Girls and Destiny’s Child in her teens. Her vocal ability brought her a lot of attention in high school. She even started writing songs during her teens. But it is the influence of jazz and soul legends like Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald which is to have brought a profound impact on her. She was not so interested in becoming a singer rather than being a record label executive that nurtures talent.
The Breakthrough!
During her teenage years she frequently recorded songs for a school projects. The songs made their way to the social networking site MySpace.com where they received tremendous attention. She received communication from XL Recording label which she doubted. However, after a meeting she signed with the label and started recording her first album in 2008. In Jan 2008 she released the single “Chasing Pavements”. The song started to receive a lot of airplay on video music channels and radio. She also made very high profile TV appearances. The critical and commercial recognition in the UK made her win a Critics Choice award at the Brit Awards in 2008. The single eventually peaked at No.2 in the UK singles chart and remained in the Top 40 for an impressive 14 weeks. A second single “Hometown Glory” reached no. 32 on the UK charts.
She started touring in the UK and by now was focusing on the American market. Prompted by her label she signed a deal with Columbia Records for the US album released. The album was released in Jun 2008 in the US and she started appearing on TV shows like the Today Show. But by Oct 08, the album had not sold well and touring was also a commercial flop. It seemed that her attempts to break into the US had failed. However she appeared on iconic NBC variety show Saturday Night Live. That episode was billed as the appearance of Sarah Palin in the midst of the US Presidential Election. The viewership was estimated at 18 million and Adele sand “Chasing Pavements”. The next day she topped iTunes Charts. The album jumped to No. 11 on the US Album charts with a rise of 35 spots within a week of the SNL performance.
