AFI was formed in 1991 when vocalist Davey Havok, guitarist Markus Stopholese, bassist Vic Chalker, and drummer Adam Carson got together. They were high school students in Ukiah, CA. After eight months, Geoff Kresge replaced Chalker and they spent these years, playing at local gigs. They released a split 7 "Dork, with some another native band, Loose Change.
The band released an EP which was titled Behind the Times. Soon after their high school days, they were forced to separate ways as they joined different colleges. They got together during a holiday break and played in only one reunion show. The audience was wowed and the members were overwhelmed by the positive response. They decided to quit school to fulfill their musical dream and go at it, full time.
Musical Fire Within
Their band name stands for A Fire Inside, Asking for It and Anthems for Insubordinates. Everything points to their motto in music. They secured a record deal with Nitro Label and released the band's second album in 1996 named Proud of ya. The band then released 2 long playing albums in 1997, which was a re-release of their 1995 debut Answer That and Stay Fashionable and Shut Your Mouth and Open your Eyes.
In 1998, a new EP was released named Fire inside and in 1999 AFI released Black Snails in sunset. Art of Drowning, another album was released a year later and this album attracted more audience. Their single 'Days of Phoenix' was the first to hit the chart of Billboard's 200.
New Millennium- New Beginning
At the dawn of new millennium, they teamed up with two new producers, Jerry Finn and Garbage's Butch Vig for new recording sessions. This yielded new a milestone for the band in the new millennium, as they recorded the ambitious song 'Sing the Sorrow'. This was their major-label debut for DreamWorks was released in 2003. Through the band's cross over into mainstream, the song Sing the Sorrow went platinum.
With Jerry Finn, a professional whose attention to detail is a character, the band found themselves in the most labor intensive days ahead. They had 2 years of detailed song writing, which was hard stuff, but was also very insightful. They released 'December underground' which was their 7th album in 2006 under Interscope Label. It was an immediate success and the first song debuted at number one on the Billboard Chart. This was a great way to launch their summer-long tour, which was set to follow with a string of overseas performances.
AFI released their first DVD I heard Voice, which featured their live performance in Long Beach California in December of 2006. This album was re-released on iTunes in November of the following year. The game sound track for Guitar Hero III was released in December of 2007 and this downloadable song was exclusively for the Xbox 360 Version.
In 2009, they released their latest album Crash Love and the members of the band continue to strive for the best. Fans that have been with them since they one say, that their music is not only about rock and roll; but about life and reality.
