The group would form after many of its members were duo or solo acts but would go on to become one of the most famous pop groups of their time. They would get their start with manager Stig Anderson who would help them gain the public attention that they so desired. Countless name changes under many different members would continue until finally in 1973 the group would settle on the name ABBA.
Career Start
Under the direction of Stig Anderson, the group would finally settle on their band name of ABBA. The group had a very rocky beginning entering numerous talent contests but would finally get their first break through when they would star on the Eurovision talent show and gain a solid Swedish fan base in 1974. They would go on to release their first single called Waterloo, which would become the group's first number one chart position in the UK, Germany, and Australia.
It would also reach number six on the Billboard Hot 100, which would also gain enough popularity to hold an American tour. After the group's release of a few hit singles, they would embark on their first European tour, which would further solidify their fan base across the continent although it was not very successful and the group would have to cancel some of their shows because of lack of ticket sales. However, once the group made it to Scandinavia they would see shows sell out one by one and this would rejuvenate the group for the rest of the tour.
Continued Success
The group would go back into the studio after the hectic tour schedule and release two more singles although they would receive virtually no airplay in the UK. However, with their next album release called ABBA, the group would get back on top to reclaim the fame that they had received a year earlier. The group would release the single called SOS would go to number ten on the Record World Top 100 although the group still had little acclaim within the United States; however, their break through for world wide fame was just right around the corner.
Breakthrough Success
The group would release their Greatest Hits album in March of 1976 although they had only a few top forty hits during their tenure in rock n' roll. Interestingly enough, the album would become one of the best selling albums of the year and would sell over one million copies alone in the UK. On this new album was the single called Fernando, which would eventually reach the charts in the entire world. In the United States, the single would make it to number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100. The group was headed for success with their next album called Arrival, which was a change from their older works and would show the world their many talents.
The album would be the number one best seller of the present and would also contain the world wide single hit called Dancing Queen, which went to number in almost every country where it was released including the United States. The group would go back on tour in 1977 where it would begin in Oslo. They would continue to tour through Europe and sell out almost every show as they went.
