The Formation
The three protagonists of the band Naturi Naughton, Adrienne Bailon and Kiely Williams came together in 1999 when Michelle Williams, the mother of Kiely wanted initiated the formation if the band. Michelle Williams was the band's manager and was able to secure a record deal with Epic Records on the strength of their demo.
The 3LW Debut
The first single "No More Baby (I'ma Do Right") was released in 2000. A hip hop tune debut into the top 30 of US Singles chart and peaked at no.23. It is considered the groups signature tune. The video for the single was directed by Chris Robinson who had worked with the likes of Beyonce and Jay-Z. The video received a lot of media attention and was on far rotation on the video music channels.
The single's moderate success led to the launch of their self-titled debut album "3LW". The album was pure hip-hop style and pop sampling. Produced by an ensemble group of producers, it featured a second hit single - "Playas Gon' Play". The band went on a nationwide MTV Total Request Live tour along with other artists like Destiny's Child, Eve and Jessica Simpson.
Second Album and Break-up
After the tour, the girls took a break and then started recording the second album. The group returned with P.Diddy produced single "I Do (Wanna Get Close To You)". Not as successful as the previous two singles, the song peaked at No. 58 on the US singles chart. The video for the single would be the last to feature the three together.
Prior to the release of the Naturi Naughton is said to have had a heated arguments regarding financial matters with the other two and most notably with the groups manager; the altercation lead to her departure from the band which she publicly blamed on the others. Naturi considered herself as the leader of the band and the main attraction.
The band released the already scheduled album ""A Girl can Mack" in 2002. the album peaked at No.15 and was a commercial disappointment. The remaining two members Adrienne and Kiely continued with the group's name. Post the departure of Naturi, there was less interest in their work and consequently Epic Records dropped them as an artist.
The group's management started auditioning for a replaced for Naturi and Jessica Benson was recruited as a full time member. The band signed to "So So Def label" . The third studio release "Point of NO Return" was ready to be launched but was then postponed to 2007 as the two main lead singers were involved with the Disney project "The Cheetah Girls".
The album has still not been released and in 2008 Adrienne confirmed in an interview that the three members had mutually agreed to disband and focus on their solo careers
