The Band Formation
The bands roots can be traced to Orlando, Florida. Lou Pearlman who had created the Backstreet Boys was buoyed by his first boy bands success and wanted to follow it up with another. Chris Kirkpatrick first contacted Lou Pearlman to start a new boy band and they started to put together the band. Joey Fatone, Justin Timberlake, Lance Bass and JC Chasez completed the line up. They started rehearsing under the watchful eyes of their manager calling themselves as Nsync.
Their first performance was at an amusement park and also started recording demos. They signed to Sony BMG who were initially reluctant but new of Pearlman's know how in the Boyband genre. The band relocated to Sweden to capture the European market and released their first single in 1996 "I want you back"; it reached the top 10 in Germany. They began touring Europe and getting used to the stage shows to gain enough experience before entering the US market. The self-titled first album was released in Germany and immediately made an impact. The album reached no.1 in several countries in Europe.
The Boys are Rising
Lou Pearlman meanwhile started to arrange record executives to travel to Europe to see his new protégés perform. The band signed up with RCA and now started recording for the US market. They released the first album on heavy MTV promotion and marketing - the album managed to reach NO. 82 but a concert performance on Disney channel saw it catapult to No.9. An opening act for the Janet Jackson's Velvet Rope tour got them a bigger fan base.
Several carefully planned media appearances, TV shows, MTV programming and online marketing has made the album sell 10 million copies in the US.
A quickly produced Christmas album in 1998 sold 2 million copies cementing their superstar status. Lour Pearlman had his second big band.
The Global Success
Prior to the release of the new album, the relationship with Lou Pearlman and the band soured. They had a much publicized legal battle where the band contested that the manager was eating away their share and was responsible for illicit business practices. A court battle resulted in the bands favor and they signed with Jive records.
The band released their No.1 single "Bye Bye Bye" the catchy pop tune was a global success, prompting the album to sell 1 million copies on its very first day of release. It said to have sold 5 million copies in 5 weeks! By the end of the year it had sold 10 million. The band quickly moved into their first headline "No String Attached US Tour" which had Pink as an opening act. Playing large arenas the band grossed 70 million.
In 2001, the band released "Celebrity" which was a slight change in the musical sound as they produced a more creative effort. The band used hip-hop production more than their previous records. The album debut at No.1 and the single "Pop" with its cool video was a smash hit. The ensuing tour dubbed the "Pop Odyssey" tour was a stadium juggernaut which saw the band grossed nearly a $100 million
By 2003, after a small hiatus, the band realized the decline of the boy band genre and gradually drifted into their solo careers. Nsync folded as a band leaving a list of great commercial achievements and signaling the end of boy bands as well.
